This report explores the flood events that happen in Kamloops, BC, the cost of temporary measures of protecting the City’s infrastructure, and the damage repeatedly occuring in areas located in the flood plain, specifically McArthur Island. I took two approaches to this project. First, what would be the best way to employ more permanent flood protection for the areas of McArthur Island that tend to flood, and second, what options could be utilized to contribute to regional flood protection. Often, the thought is to simply protect the local site, but this can push flooding problems to surrounding areas. The choices that were decided upon were to use concrete, a sustainable option due to the longevity of the material’s strength, to form a barrier along the river side of the park, and to deepen the slough, which would allocate space for flood water to collect instead of pushing the extra flood water onto neighbouring properties. With the changes made to the slough is a plan to rehabilitate the wildlife habitat within the slough for waterfowl and marine life.
